SOLANO COUNTY, CA — A 19-year-old Oroville man died Friday morning when his work truck drifted off the freeway, hit a large sign post and caught fire.
California Highway Patrol dispatchers started receiving reports just after 6:20 a.m. Friday about the Ford F-150 utility truck that went off westbound I-80 just east of E. Monte Vista Avenue and Interstate Highway 505.
"For unknown reasons, the Ford drifted onto the right shoulder of Interstate 80 and collided with a large sign post," CHP Officer David Harvey said. "The driver was pronounced deceased at the collision scene."
A Sig-alert was issued at 6:55 a.m. and remained in effect for several hours as traffic backed up along westbound I-80.
The guardrail, a road sign, utility posts and a chain-link fence were reportedly damaged in the collision. The truck was reportedly filled with transportation signs.
CHP was not able to immediately determine how fast the truck was going when it went off the roadway.
The Solano County coroner's office was expected to identify the driver once his family members were properly notified.
Just after 10 a.m., CHP reported that all lanes were reopened.
