One HS Senior Will Be Chosen For Renewable $2.5K Scholarship

GENEVA, IL — One Geneva High School senior will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship in honor of Beth Shannon, a Western Avenue Elementary School teacher of 19 years who died in 2016. The Beth Shannon Memorial Education Scholarship, awarded by the Geneva Education Association, is a renewable scholarship given to a current senior who intends to pursue a degree in the field of education. To qualify, students also have to have a GPA of at least 3.0 out of a possible 4.0. "Our hope is that this scholarship will aide a Geneva student in becoming an educator who embodies Beth's treatment of all students: with a smile, patience, encouragement, and guidance," officials said. Of the teacher, who mostly taught fifth grade at the Geneva elementary school, district officials described her as "kind, loving, intelligent, patient, and caring." As a renewable scholarship, the student can get up to $10,000 if they meet re-application qualifications, listed below, each year. Must be enrolled in an accredited college.Must maintain a college GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.Must provide a copy of college transcript, including major declared.Must submit transcript by May 1 of each subsequent year in college. Students interested in applying are required to submit a copy of their transcript, complete the online application and send in an essay by March 15. Copies of college acceptance letters needed for the scholarship application will be accepted by April 25.
