UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Opera was one of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's great loves during her life, and Lincoln Center honored the late Supreme Court justice on Tuesday with a live performance. In a tribute to Ginsburg, soprano Christine Goerke sang "Abscheulicher!" from Beethoven's opera "Fidelio." "The aria, with its strong independent female heroine, is a fitting tribute to a woman who fought tirelessly for justice throughout her career," a spokeswoman from Lincoln Center wrote in an email to Patch. The performance was filmed on Lincoln Center's Upper West Side campus with piano accompaniment. The performance premiered Tuesday night on Lincoln Center's Facebook page. In 2015, an opera opened about Ginsburg and Justice Antonin Scalia's relationship, which Ginsburg quoted from at Scalia's funeral in 2016. "Most of the time, even when I go to sleep, I'm thinking about legal problems," she said in a 2015 interview with AARP The Magazine. "But when I go to the opera, I'm just lost in it." You can read the full interview about Ginsburg's love for the opera on the magazine's website.
