Description

Workshop: Critical Tasks in Action! with Dr. Julio Torres The Lobo Language Acquisition Lab presents: Critical Tasks in Action! with Dr. Julio Torres Event Details Time: Saturday, March 12th, 12pm-2pm MST Location: SUB – Lobo A & B Free Event Workshop Description Task-based language teaching (TBLT) is an educational framework for the theory and practice of teaching languages that adopts meaning-based, communicative tasks in order to define learning needs, curriculum goals, and to design classroom activities and assess language competencies. In this workshop, we explore the use of TBLT to go beyond the promotion of language performance and development. Recently, TBLT scholars have endorsed the concept of critical tasks, which is the use of pedagogic tasks that promote learners' critical thinking on the sociopolitical structures of their local communities with a goal to promote change (Ellis, 2021; Crookes & Ziegler, 2022; Serafini, under review). The goal of the workshop is to promote the design of critical tasks following a TBLT methodology to help students challenge monolingual and standardized language ideologies by considering multilingual competencies, sociolinguistic principles and critical language awareness. Participants will reflect on their local context regarding these issues and will see models of critical task-based lessons. Participants will leave the workshop with an outline of a critical task-based lesson they wish to implement.
