Join the BIPOC Coalition this February to celebrate Black History Month through conversations regarding identity.
BIPOC Coalition is in partnership with schools across Iowa including Drake University, Simpson College, Grand View, Central College, and William Penn University.
This Black History Month, we look to learn of and celebrate Black changemakers in all aspects of life. Through honoring and remembering what our ancestors achieved against the greatest of odds, we can look towards our future and imagine success for ourselves today. With our history, we also want to discuss our Identity. Who we are. Through discussions with students from schools across Iowa, you have the opportunity to look into how you identify, and how other students that share similar experiences identify as well.
We invite all students of all backgrounds no matter race, religion, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, and/or identification to participate in this event. We aim to foster a safe and respectful space where all can share their truths and lived experiences while encouraging tough conversations. Students are more than welcome to come for the food and fun and stick around for a great learning experience.
We will have an opportunity to hear from two amazing speakers Dr. Jihna Jenkins, the advisor for the Black Leadership Initiative at William Penn University, and Dr. Jennifer Harvey, the Associate Provost for Campus Equity and Inclusion at Drake University. Our speakers will be present as a guide and support for the event, but all affinity groups will be student-led.
