(ROSLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y.) - The Roslyn Rescue Fire Department's Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 recently purchased three new Chest Compression System devices using grant funds secured by Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D-Glen Cove). "Equipping our first responders with these life-saving devices will benefit every resident served by Roslyn Rescue's Hook and Ladder Company No. 1," Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. "Protecting the health and safety of our residents will always be my top priority as a Legislator, and I will continue to do all I can to support the brave men and women who are the lifeblood of Nassau County's volunteer fire departments." The $56,238 Community Revitalization Program grant fully funded the purchase of three LUCAS (Lund University Cardiac Assist System) devices, which deliver automated, continuous and perfectly timed closed chest compressions while administering CPR. "We are very fortunate to have been given these life-saving devices that will ultimately be extremely beneficial to the community we serve," Roslyn Rescue Fire Department President Salvatore Mirra said. "These units are very costly, and it is a relief to have them now rather than have to wait until a future date when we could budget for them." LUCAS devices perform chest compressions at a level of consistency and precision that cannot be matched even by the best-trained CPR practitioner. Confident in the fact that they are delivering optimal CPR, the devices also free up first responders to turn their attention to delivering other forms of care. The devices also allow patients to be safely moved and transported without interrupting the delivery of CPR. "It's like having an extra set of hands that doesn't get tired and does the most critical and effortful role in CPR, which allows us to focus on other lifesaving means like securing a difficult airway, IV and fluid/medication administration," Department Chief Jordan Williams said. "Every second counts when it comes to patient resuscitation and a positive patient outcome." "Delia and I have known each other for a very long time so it is especially gratifying that we received these life-saving CPR devices through her office at the County Legislature," EMS Captain Ian Newman added.
