WEST HAVEN, CT — A man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting that injured two people in West Haven last October, according to police. Police responded to Third Avenue and Main Street on Oct. 11, 2021, on the report of gunshots and two people injured, according to officials. Officers found a man who had been shot in the back of the head along with a woman who had been grazed by a bullet, according to police. An investigation found that approximately 10 gunshots were fired by two occupants of a vehicle that had been traveling north on Third Avenue, police said. The vehicle then left the scene. The suspects were identified following a lengthy investigation and arrest warrants were obtained for Jose Nunez and Katherine Colon, both of Hine Street in West Haven, according to police. Police said Nunez, 34, and Colon, 29, both fled the state after the incident and were found in Tampa, Florida, by West Haven detectives and the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force. West Haven police detectives traveled to Tampa on Feb. 9 where Nunez and Colon were extradited back to Connecticut to face a judge in Milford Superior Court, according to police. Nunez was charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, two counts of first-degree assault, criminal possession of pistol/revolver, carrying pistol without a permit, illegal discharge of firearm and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was being held in lieu of a $350,000 bond with a court date of March 3, according to state judicial records. Nunez was additionally charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, sale of more than or equal to ½ ounce of cocaine/free base, conspiracy to commit sale, sale of narcotic substance, conspiracy to commit sale of narcotic substance, illegally obtaining prescription drug – fraud, and operating a drug factory. He was being held in lieu of a $75,000 bond on those charges. Colon was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, tampering with physical evidence, failure to store firearm re: ineligible, and violation of pistol permit requirement. She was being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond with a court date of Feb. 14, according to state judicial records. Colon was additionally charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, sale of more than or equal to ½ ounce of cocaine/free base, possession with intent narcotic substance, conspiracy to commit with intent narcotic substance, illegally obtaining prescription drug – fraud, and operating a drug factory. She was being held in lieu of a $75,000 bond on those charges.
