Kennesaw Election Results: Easterling, Eaton, Viars Reelected

KENNESAW, GA — Unofficial results Tuesday showed all three Kennesaw City Council incumbents were reelected to their seats. Mayor Derek Easterling ran unopposed, and received 1,361 votes. Post 1 saw a fight between three candidates, with incumbent James Eaton ultimately keeping his seat with 837 votes. He was pitted against Antonio Jones and Karen Gitau who each received 454 and 220 votes, respectively. Councilwoman Tracey Viars ran unopposed for Post 2, and received 1,380 votes. The City of Kennesaw does not have run off elections, results are through plurality vote, City Clerk Debra Taylor said. Cobb County had other elections in Austell, Powder Springs and Smyrna. Out of the 73,757 registered voters in these areas, 11,108, or 15 percent, voted Tuesday. The Kennesaw City Council election took place Nov. 5. Georgia will be using a new voting system next year. The new system includes electronic ballot marking devices that record the voters' choices on paper ballots that the voters review and drop into a scanner. Six counties will be piloting the new system this November, and Cobb County has been asked to pilot a modified version of the new system during the Nov. 5 municipal elections.
