MIDDLETOWN, CT — Middletown school officials will continue to work with state health officials and legislators in determining how best to address Gov. Ned Lamont's plans to end the state's school mask mandate at the end of the month. Lamont announced plans Monday to end the school mask mandate on Feb. 28. Local officials would then have control over mask policies for schools and childcare centers. Currently, the mask mandate remains in place in all Middletown schools and childcare centers. Acting Superintendent of Schools Alberto Vázquez-Matos and Mayor Ben Florsheim released the following response regarding the end of the statewide mask mandate for schools: "It is with the health and safety of all Middletown students, residents, and employees that we, the undersigned, have chosen to work collaboratively with one another and with the Middletown Health Department to determine the metrics by which we will make this decision. Additionally, we are working closely with Middletown's legislators to ensure that we are receiving appropriate information and guidance from state agencies. At the time of the writing of this statement, we have not yet determined these metrics nor have we made any decisions. "As meetings take place and subsequent decisions are made, we will keep the public apprised of the process, as well as any new information that becomes available. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as this is not a decision that we take lightly."
