BELMONT, CA — After an "extensive national search," the city of San Mateo stayed local in its pick for a new police chief: Ed Barberini, a Belmont resident and 25-year law enforcement veteran who has spent the last five years as Chief of the San Bruno Police Department and previously led the Millbrae Police Bureau. Barberini previously spent more than 20 years with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in various positions including administration, corrections and the bomb squad. He also directed the county's Office of Emergency Services and Homeland Security. As chief, Barberini will oversee about 170 law enforcement personnel, with an annual budget of about $47 million. He will take over as chief on February 3, 2020, succeeding longtime chief Susan Manheimer, who is retiring at the end of the year. "I am extremely excited to join this team and help carry on the excellent work being done not only within the police department, but throughout the City," Barberini said in a statement. "I could not be more grateful for the tremendous opportunity to work with the entire community to ensure the City of San Mateo continues to be the very special place it is."
