DUI Checkpoint Coming Up On Peninsula

SAN CARLOS, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office will conduct a Sobriety/Driver's License Checkpoint that starts Friday, Dec. 20 at 6 p.m. and runs until Saturday at 2 a.m. in San Carlos. Deputies at the operation, planned for the 1200 and 1300 blocks of San Carlos Avenue, will be checking for proper licensing and drug- or alcohol-impaired drivers, the agency said, adding that "DUI doesn't just mean booze." "In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving crashes," officials said. "If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a warning against driving or operating machinery on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI." Locations for such checkpoints are selected based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, and publicizing the operations have proven to be deterrents that reduce crashes involving impaired drivers by up to 20 percent, deputies said.
