****Non-certified candidates / students of ASL looking to gain interpreting experience are welcome (NAD / RID certification not required) **** The Place: Maccabi Sports Camp is an overnight specialty camp with programs in soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, and volleyball, for children entering grades 3-11. Our sessions combine high-level specialized sports instruction with the fun, friendship, and community of a traditional overnight camp. The Job: Are you fluent in American Sign Language and interested in working around youth and teens in an engaging sports summer camp environment? If so, this this might be the job for you! As the American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter you will provide interpreting services for a Deaf staff member in all areas of the camp environment. Your primary function is to facilitate communication among the Deaf staff member and hearing staff, campers, parents and other camp personnel. You must be able to process information quickly and concisely, and be professional and courteous at all times. In addition, you must use appropriate terminology and understand common industry procedures and practices. Being familiar with the signs and vocabulary for baseball is very helpful. The Core Duties: • Interpret for staff who are deaf or hard of hearing in all areas of the camp. This may include but is not limited to practice, games, staff meetings, telephone calls, ceremonies, parent meetings when necessary and other camp and company meetings • Exhibit professional behavior at all times including punctuality, preparedness, respectful and collaborative interaction with colleagues and supervisors • Possess the ability to work effectively in a fast paced, dynamic environment • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in all settings • Serve as a positive role model, exemplifying the core values of the Maccabi Sports Camp • Create and maintain positive relationships with other staff members and Leadership Staff • Live in dormitory housing during camp and eat all meals on camp with assigned cabin and campers • Be familiar with and support the successful execution of all camp policies and procedures, including safety and emergency plans The Essentials: • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English language skills required. Non-certified candidates / students of ASL looking to gain interpreting experience are welcome (NAD / RID certification not required) • Able to provide accurate interpretation between deaf or hard of hearing and hearing clients • Familiar with or ability to familiarize yourself with the signs and vocabulary of certain sports prior to camp • Good understanding of Deaf culture • Some experience in interpreting preferred but not required • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. Ability to communicate information clearly (written and oral). • Ability to work as part of a team • Ability to take direction from Leadership Staff and Head Coaches • Interest in working hard, serving as a role model, and positively impacting the lives of campers
