GRAND RAPIDS, MI — One person died early Sunday morning in a Grand Rapids house fire, city police and fire officials said. The fire was at a home in the 2100 block of Oakwood Avenue NE, police said. The fire department was called around 11 a.m. by someone who said smoke was coming from the home, police said. Police and fire units responded to the home and Grand Rapids firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, but a search of the home resulted in authorities finding the remains of of one person, police said. The Kent County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy at a later time, police said. The Grand Rapids Fire Department arson investigators and Major Case Team are investigating, police said.
