Press release from the Baldwin Park Unified School District: State Sen. Susan Rubio partnered with Meruelo Enterprises Inc. to provide 250 BPUSD students in K-6 with backpacks and school supplies on Sept. 16. 250 Baldwin Park Unified elementary school students received backpacks and school supplies from State Sen. Susan Rubio during a drive-through distribution event at Sierra Vista High School on Sept. 16. Wearing face masks and plastic gloves during the socially distanced event, Sen. Rubio – joined by Superintendent Dr. Froilan Mendoza, Board of Education President Christina Lucero, Board member Santos Hernandez Jr., and Sierra Vista Principal Vince Pratt – greeted families as they arrived to pick up their backpacks and supplies. The backpacks came in different colors and different sizes depending on the student's grade. Each backpack came attached with a message from Sen. Rubio that read, "May you have a wonderful school year. Remember to READ, READ, READ." "It was wonderful to see Sen. Rubio here in Baldwin Park personally greeting families and facilitating the distribution," Dr. Mendoza said. "Sen. Rubio's passion for education is very much in alignment with the District mission, which is to provide equity and opportunity for every student. Thank you to her staff and to Meruelo Enterprises for all of their support." Meruelo Enterprises Inc., a southern California utility and commercial construction contractor, contributed the backpacks and school supplies, which included pencils, erasers, crayons, glue, pencil boxes and pouches, and a yellow highlighter. Sen. Rubio represents California's 22nd District and is a former educator who began her teaching career at Baldwin Park Unified. "As a public-school teacher for 17 years, I understand the importance of students having the necessary school supplies in order to have a successful school year," Sen. Rubio said. "This upcoming year, more than ever, families are struggling to provide basic necessities. Along with Meruelo Enterprises, I'm grateful to be able to provide these supplies to Baldwin Park students."
