SUDBURY, MA — Here's what's going on at the Sudbury Senior Center in February 2022: In the Footsteps of Vincent van GoghThe Great Courses DVD series - In the Footsteps of Vincent van Gogh will be shown on February 7 – March 28. Class meets via Zoom on Mondays, 10:00—11:00 AM. To sign up please, email Chery Finley at [email protected]. A Zoom link will be sent to you the day before the class. BingoThe Bingo group is back together! Bingo players will meet every Tuesday from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. To sign up, please contact the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055 or email [email protected]. We are limited to 20 participants. CribbageCribbage players will meet on Mondays from 10:00 – 12:00 PM. Bring your board if you have one. Intermediate BridgePlayers will meet on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 3:30 PM. Marilyn Tromer will be the group leader. Jon has many years of experience and teaches at several local fitness clubs. Class is held on Mondays from 2:15 - 3:15 PM. Sign up now, spots are available! Staying Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) Fitness Class Join Derry Tanner, retired nurse, fellow Sudbury resident and certified personal trainer for Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL). SAIL is 45-minute safe and effective fitness class for adults 65+. Current class takes place via Zoom on 8 Thursdays at 9:15 AM. Research-tested strength, balance and flexibility exercises will make you stronger, help you feel better and improve your balance. Please register by emailing Chery Finley at [email protected]. Chair Yoga on ZoomClass is held on 8 Fridays from 9:30 AM - 10:15 AM. Join Rebecca Reber for a gentle and relaxing class, with stretching and range of motion exercises. Yoga is excellent for loosening tension and maintaining range of motion for the joints. Tap Dance -Intermediate Learn new steps and practice what you know in a fun, relaxed atmosphere with instructor Susan Craver. Class will run for 8 Thursdays from 9:15 AM – 10:00 AM. Uber Clinic Technology SupportWe are excited to offer 30-minute time slots in our "Uber Clinics," staffed by the Senior Center's Technology Support Volunteers who will assist eligible clients with issues relating to how to download and use the Uber application on his/her smartphone for use in the subsidized Go Sudbury! Uber Program. This support can be given by phone or remotely, and is by appointment only. If you are interested in having the new Uber Guide emailed to you or want to register for a one-on-one consultation, please contact the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055. Uber Clinic hours are Tuesdays from 3:00 - 4:00 PM, and Fridays from 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM and 1:00 – 2:00 PM. Caregivers Support Group Caregivers often feel like they are alone. Support groups develop a sense of community through shared feelings and experiences. People feel connected with one another which can assist them in addressing their personal concerns and their need to ask questions. People feel comfortable to have a good laugh and rejuvenate through inspiring, and often comical stories that are shared between members. Come join us if you're caring for a loved one with memory loss. We are meeting in person at the Senior Center on the first of the month. Hope to see you! This is a collaborative effort of the Wayside Inn (which donates the empty buckets), the Department of Public Works (which fills the empty buckets with sand), and our Senior Center volunteers who make the deliveries to seniors that request sand. If you need a sand bucket, please call Janet Lipkin at 978-639-3223. Please be sure to let Janet know how many buckets you are requesting, and the exact location where you would like the bucket(s) placed outside of the home. The ConcertoThe Great Courses DVD Series – The Concerto is being shown September 12 – March 22. Class meets via Zoom on Tuesdays from 9:30 - 10:30 AM. SNAP Program You may be eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. SNAP provides a monthly benefit to buy nutritious foods. To receive SNAP, you must be low income and be a US citizen or legal noncitizen. Eligibility for SNAP benefits depend on financial and nonfinancial criteria. It is easy to apply! Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)The Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has been available in Massachusetts to low-income households since 1977. Also known as Fuel Assistance, this program helps income-eligible households pay a portion of their heating bills between November 1 and April 30. To see if you qualify, call the Sudbury Senior Center and ask to speak with Ana Cristina Oliveira, Outreach Information Specialist at 978-443-3055. Coffee HourAll are welcome to come on down to the Sudbury Senior center every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 – 11:00 AM for coffee and conversation. We will provide the coffee! Low Vision Support Group We are happy to share that our low vision participants will be meeting in person at the Senior Center. The group meets on the first Thursday of the month at 1:00 PM. Friday, March 11 at 1:00 PM – Made in ItalyWhen London artist Robert travels to Italy with his estranged son to sell the house they've inherited, they're shocked at the villa's condition. As they work on repairs, their relationship becomes even more strained, but a bond slowly begins to form. Friday, March 25 at 1:00 PM - Dream Horse A true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely racehorse bred by small-town bartender Jan Vokes. Jan convinces her neighbors to chip in their meager earnings to raise Dream and compete against the racing elites. VolunteersThe Sudbury Senior Center has opportunities for volunteers in a variety of roles including, weekly grocery shopping for seniors in town or on a substitute basis. Dementia Friendly SudburyThe Dementia Friendly Sudbury Action Team seeks to help our community become more welcoming to residents with dementia and their families. A Dementia Friendly Sudbury community addresses the needs of residents, advocates for dementia awareness and provides services, programs, and public spaces that support people with dementia and their care partners. The team is offering Dementia information sessions to town staff and community members, as well as outreach on Dementia friendly efforts to the business community. It only takes an hour to become a Dementia Friend, and from there it's up to you how you turn your new understanding into action. Goodnow to Go Goodnow to Go is a collaboration with the Goodnow Library and the Sudbury Senior Center to supply library materials to Sudbury residents unable to travel to the Library due to a temporary or permanent disabling condition. Patrons wishing to use this service can fill out the Goodnow to Go form, indicating their material preferences.
