ATLANTIC BEACH, NY — A local assemblywoman is stepping down, but not leaving politics. Melissa Miller (R- Atlantic Beach) confirmed to Patch her decision to leave Albany because of caring for her developmentally disabled son and she can no longer travel with him to the state capital. "I wanted to make a difference and represent the most vulnerable people in our society, people who desperately need a voice in government," she told her colleagues in the Assembly. Miller said she learned a great deal from her time as an assemblywoman. She was elected in Nov. 2016. Miller will not have a void in politics as she is taking Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman's former slot as Town of Hempstead Councilwoman for the 3rd District. "This will enable me to continue making a positive difference for the residents whom I will serve," she said. "At the same time, it will afford me the ability to be close to my home and my son."
