WESTPORT, CT — A car stolen from a parking lot in Westport was later involved in an accident in town Thursday morning, according to police. In a news release, Police Lt. Dave Wolf said the car was reported stolen from a lot located at 285 Post Road East around 7:40 a.m. The owner told officers he parked the car around 7 a.m., and when he returned to the lot 40 minutes later it was gone. The car had been left unlocked with the key fob inside, Wolf said. As officers were responding to this incident, a car accident was reported in a parking lot located at 500 Post Road East. Police quickly determined the vehicle involved in the accident was the stolen car, Wolf said. The car was unoccupied when officers arrived in the area. Though police searched the area with the assistance of K-9s from Norwalk and Darien, they could not find the suspects, Wolf said. As this incident was unfolding, a wallet was also reported stolen from an unlocked car parked at 400 Post Road East, Wolf noted. "Once again, the police department cannot stress enough the importance of keeping your vehicle locked at all times," Wolf said in a news release. "Additionally, should you happen to witness a person stealing or burglarizing a car, do not intervene, as in some instances these individuals are armed. Instead, immediately notify the police."
