New Bike Upgrades May Be Coming To Framingham Streets

FRAMINGHAM, MA — New bike infrastructure may soon be coming to two main roads on Framingham's north side, providing connections to existing bike lanes. At an upcoming meeting, the Traffic Commission will discuss upgrades along Potter Road and Brook Street. The upgrades will include "sharrows" — a pavement marking in the shape of a bicycle — and signs asking drivers to "share the road," a Department of Public Works spokesperson confirmed. The commission will discuss the cost of the upgrades, and whether they fit with existing traffic conditions. Both Potter Road and Brook Street have been deemed too narrow for dedicated bike lanes, the DPW spokesperson said. If installed, the new bike markings would complement bike lanes that run from Saxonville — where the Cochituate Rail Trail begins — along Water Street. The intersection of Water Street and Potter Road is also a main access point to the unpaved Weston Aqueduct trail. It's also possible to access the Mass Central Rail Trail in Wayland by taking exiting Potter Road to Elm Street and traveling along Pelham Island Road. The Traffic Commission is set to discuss the bicycle upgrades at the Feb. 22 meeting.
