COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — A suspect was arrested Thursday afternoon in Colorado Springs after authorities issued a shelter-in-place order.
Residents were told to shelter in place within a quarter-mile of Excursion and Village drives around noon Thursday. Residents were told to stay away from exterior doors and windows, and French Elementary School was placed on lockout.
"There is significant LE activity in the 4000 block of Excursion Drive," the El Paso County Sheriff's Office tweeted Thursday.
"Anyone else stay out of the area for your safety," the office added.
Around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, authorities said a suspect was arrested, and the shelter order was lifted. French Elementary School returned to normal operations.
Caregivers had been asked to not head to the school. It was on a secure perimeter status due to nearby police activity, a spokeswoman for Widefield School District 3 confirmed to Patch in an email. Doors were locked, but classes continued as normal.
The name of the suspect and nature of the crime wasn't immediately released. The sheriff's office thanked residents for helping to keep the scene as safe as possible.
