MIDLOTHIAN, IL — Bremen High School officials will remember Cameran Wheatley as a positive role model who was taken much too soon.
Wheatley, a 17-year-old senior, died after he collapsed during a basketball game about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, the school said. First responders arrived within five minutes and performed CPR on the teenager before he was taken to Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Wheatley's Facebook page described him as a "hooper" and included several videos of him playing basketball as a member of Bremen's team.
"We are extremely saddened by the loss of our student-athlete. He has been a great role-model in every sense and he will be missed," a statement issued by the school said. "Our thoughts and prayers."
A spokesman for Chicago Public Schools said Thursday that the district is not commenting on the incident as of now.
Wheatley was healthy and had participated in sports for 10 years, his father told ABC 7. School officials are working with the Bremen High School community and with Wheatley's family.
This is a developing story. Patch will update as more information becomes available.
