JOLIET, IL — Nearly 11 months after Elwood police arrested a 54-year-old out of town man on charges of traveling to meet a minor, Alfred Charmelo of Des Plaines is now at the Illinois Department of Corrections.
His projected release date is April 22.
In October, Will County Judge Sarah Jones sentenced Charmelo to one year in prison at the Department of Corrections following his guilty plea to the crime of grooming.
Charmelo was given credit for spending 214 days inside the Will County Jail following his arrest by Elwood police on March 13, 2021.
According to the criminal complaint, Charmelo traveled to O'Connor Park in Elwood last March for the purpose of engaging in predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.
The Will County State's Attorney's Office of Jim Glasgow initially charged him with traveling to meet a minor, indecent solicitation of a child and unlawful grooming.
The criminal complaint states that Charmelo "knowingly discussed an act of sexual conduct or sexual penetration with an undercover persona, whom the defendant believed to be a child under the age of 13 years of age, by means of the Internet with the intent that the offense of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child be committed."
