Press release from the City of Syracuse: October 15 2020 The Syracuse Police Department has released a draft revision of its use-of-force policy. The revised draft policy's contains core principles that emphasize: preservation of sanctity of human life; an officer's obligation to de-escalate interactions when safe and feasible; and an officer's sworn duty to intervene and report any unauthorized use of force. The new policy bans the use of chokeholds as a police practice in a manner consistent with the conduct prohibited by the Eric Garner Anti-Chokehold Act (NY Penal Law 121.13-A). The release of the draft policy will allow for consideration of input collected through a public engagement process as promised by Mayor Walsh and required by Governor Cuomo's Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Executive Order.
