SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A scam targeting the elderly has been tied to a home in Southampton Village, police said. According to Suffolk County Police, financial crimes unit detectives are investigating the scam, which targeted a man, 75, from New Mexico, who sent $8,500 in cash to the home, believing he was a lottery winner and the funds would pay fees for him to collect his prize. On Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., police waited at the location after the package was delivered but no one responded to the home to retrieve it, police said. Detectives are asking anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam or have information about a scam to call the financial crimes unit at 631-852-6821.
