This is a 26 week term, serving a minimum of 900 hours. The goal of this term is to create, restore, or maintain the network of trails within the Ochoco National Forest and Crooked River national Grasslands. Other projects will serve to conserve/enhance the natural resources and beautify communities of Central Oregon; to protect communities from wildfire through fire fuels reduction; gain experience and formal training in environmental stewardship and conservation. Furthermore, a goal of this term of service will be to promote community service and education awareness, and to obtain an AmeriCorps Segal Education Award. Primary Responsibilities Include: -Constructing and/or maintaining trails through prescribed interventions, such as brushing, logouts, debris removal, retaining wall construction, or tread and drainage management. - Conducting trail remediation, decommission, and/or closing of social trails. - Rehabilitating and/or maintaining recreational or historical sites/areas. - Assist Crew Leaders with camping prep, pack-out, and de-rigging of camping trips. - Participate in group daily living tasks at spike camps (cooking, cleaning, camp set-up, etc.). - Attending Heart of Oregon Corps-sponsored training, education and safety sessions. Classes may include Skills Clinics, technical instruction, Career/College Prep Instruction, CPR/First Aid, and other safety topics. Education and training will not exceed 20% of the Member’s total hours. - - Participate in Member-led community service activities which do not engage in prohibited activities. - Preventing wildfire through fire fuels reduction techniques. - Removing invasive plants from wetlands and planting/maintaining native plants - Improving riparian and forest habitat and vegetation through fencing and other conservation activities. - Beautifying communities through landscaping and litter removal and recycling on public and non-profit land and facilities. - Preventing soil erosion through the use of bio-engineering techniques. - Constructing in-stream structures and channels or removing barriers. - Assist in the regular maintenance and upkeep of program facilities and fleet. - Sign/date monthly timesheets and recognize that your lunch time will not count towards your service term hours Potential professional development and training opportunities including: Allingham Trails College, career planning, public land stewardship, & youth development.
