SYOSSET, NY — The Syosset Central School District has a new budget and results were announced Wednesday as well in the school board election. Voters approved the proposed 2020-21 budget with 4,105 in favor to 1,967 against. The district said in a news release that it will be able to continue providing exceptional academic and co-curricular programs, maintain a safe and healthy learning environment and support student social/emotional health. The money will also allow it to address infrastructure needs. Voters also passed Proposition 2 to authorize the district to establish a Capital Reserve Fund to finance future building renovations. The measure passed by a vote of 4,189 to 1,729. In the Board of Education election, four candidates ran for three at-large seats. Anna Levitan and Carol Cheng were re-elected, and Susan Falkove was elected. Incumbent Susan Parker did not seek re-election. The tax levy is the money raised through property taxes after all other revenue sources are deducted. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has warned that the economic effect of the coronavirus shutdown could mean much less money available for state education aid. The state will assess and adjust its budget several times in the course of this year. The governor's has estimated that state aid would be 20 percent lower than promised.
