Press release from Syosset Schools: June 23, 2020 During the weeks of June 8 and June 15, fifth grade students from the seven Syosset elementary schools participated in moving up ceremonies that looked quite different than years past, though were no less meaningful. To mark the culmination of their elementary education and advancement to the secondary level, families of fifth grade students drove them to the school to receive their certificates in a manner safe for all in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The students, eager and well-prepared to enter H.B. Thompson or South Woods Middle School this fall, beamed with excitement as they prepared to officially become middle school students. Many cars were decorated with banners, balloons and messages displaying congratulatory wishes for students and gratitude for teachers. Students waved from car windows and sunroofs as they paraded in front of the school buildings. The celebratory atmosphere brought both smiles and tears of joy. Students were presented with a certificate to recognize their achievement as they advanced from elementary to middle school, and principals and faculty wished them well as they ended quite a memorable school year and prepared to continue their educational journeys at the middle school level.
