Syosset Students Accepted Into Creative Problem-Solving Institute

SYOSSET, NY — Two high-achieving Syosset students have been accepted by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury. Ninth-graders Ria Mehta and Emily Su of Syosset High School were selected to participate in the annual program. They were among about 700 top ranking students nominated by their principals for one of 84 spots. The institute's selection into its annual program indicates the students are among the top one-tenth of 1 percent of all students in math on Long Island for their grade level. This year, students accepted into the program will spend 50 hours in virtual classes over 20 Saturday mornings. Ria and Emily's curriculum will include applying problem-solving to Euclidian algorithm, mass-point geometry, number theory, and binomial and multinomial theorems, among other topics. Institute graduates have gone on to win prestigious national and international math, science and engineering contests and have been selected as Intel and Siemens awardees in math, science or technology.
