Description
Press release from the Altadena Public Library: August 31, 2020 CHECK OUT SOME ZINES IN THE COLLECTION! A zine is a photocopied, homemade magazine. The first zine, a science fiction fanzine called The Comet, was published in 1930. Zines started to gain a lot of momentum during the countercultural movements of the 1960's and '70's, and in the punk music underground of the 1980's and '90's. That momentum hasn't died down, as zinesters have been active for decades. Due to the pandemic, many people who are quarantining at home have become reacquainted with the magic that is the zine. The Altadena Libraries are proud to announce the addition of a special zine collection to our offerings! Now available in our catalog are zines that you can check out and enjoy from home! Feeling inspired to make your own zine? Starting distribution on September 1, 2020, the Altadena Library has made zine kits for adults who are curious about zine making and don't have the basic tools needed! Included in every zine kit is a Ticonderoga #2 pencil, a fine tip pen, 5 colored pencils, washi tape, a pencil sharpener, a glue stick, and an instructional zine. Call (626) 798-0833 to place an order for curbside pickup! Limit one per household. Want even MORE zines? Drop into our monthly zine-making virtual meetup on the third Saturday of the month from 3:00-4:00pm to connect with fellow zinesters and share your progress from home! Sign up today through our online calendar at www.altadenalibrary.org/programs. HAVE AN INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT? Follow @ALTADENAZINELIBRARY for more zine-related content! Want to donate your zines to our growing collection? Areas of focus for our collection include zines written by and for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), members of the disabled community, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, minicomics, as well as art-based, political, and Los Angeles- and Altadena-centric zines. We will not tolerate hate speech of any kind! If your zine meets these guidelines, we hope that you will donate it to the Altadena Library District by dropping it off at the Main Library during curbside pickup hours. We will photocopy it and place the original in our archive and then add the photocopied version in our collection. (Be sure to include on a separate piece of paper the official title of your zine, the volume or series number if you have one, the zine creator's name, and the subjects included in your zine when you drop off your creation!)
