The 2022 Best of Preps event will recognize the accomplishments and sportsmanship of high school prep athletes in Cochise County Best of Preps is designed to recognize the accomplishments and sportsmanship of high school prep athletes in Cochise County. The annual awards banquet held Thursday, June 9, 2022, as a way to say thank you to the hundreds of outstanding high school athletes, coaches and fans who allow us to share their stories, performances and passions. Awards will be presented to the Outstanding Player of the Year in each sport, as well as Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the year and Coach of the Year. A special Courage award will be present to an individual or team who may have overcame a unique obstacle as well as a special sportsmanship and fan/booster of the year award will be presented. All Best of Preps athletes will be invited to attend the event for free. The event will be open for family, friends and the public to purchase tickets to attend via eventbrite. Keynote speaker NFL Hall of Fame Wide Receiver James Lofton James Lofton played wide receiver in the NFL from 1978-1993 for the Green Bay Packers (1978-1986), Los Angeles Raiders (1987-1988), Buffalo Bills (1989-1992), Los Angeles Rams (1993) and Philadelphia Eagles (1993). He enjoyed much of his success during his years in Green Bay and was eight times named to the Pro Bowl, seven of those with the Packers. Lofton was the first NFL player to amass 14,000 receiving yards in a career and became just the second player in league history to record a touchdown in each of the three decades he played. He additionally became at the time just the fifth player in NFL history to amass more than 1,000 receiving yards in five different seasons, joining Lance Alworth, Steve Largent, Art Powell and Don Maynard. Lofton became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003 and is also an inductee of the Packers Hall of Fame. Additionally, Lofton was named a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team. Lofton grew up in Los Angeles, California and attended Stanford, where he was named a second-team All-American his senior year after notching 57 catches for a total of 1,010 yards receiving along with 14 touchdowns. An accomplished track performer, Lofton also won the NCAA long jump title his last year in Palo Alto. He was picked in 1978 by the Packers in the 1st round of the NFL Draft. After retiring from playing, Lofton served as wide receivers coach for San Diego and Oakland from 2002-2008. He has also worked as a radio analyst for Westwood One and a television analyst for CBS Sports’ coverage of the NFL.
