Deputies Stop More Than 400 Speeding Drivers On I-4 In Polk

POLK COUNTY, FL — More than 400 drivers along Interstate 4 in Polk County were pulled over for aggressive driving by deputies within one month, a Polk County Sheriff's Office news release said. The sheriff's office is conducting a year-long traffic safety initiative on I-4 to slow down speeders and decrease aggressive driving in Polk County. Deputies conducted 425 traffic stops and wrote 312 citations in January. Nine people were arrested during those stops on unsaid charges. Eighteen drivers drove in excess of 100 mph in January, with the highest speed recorded at 109 mph, deputies said. The speed limit on I-4 in Polk County is 65 mph at some parts, and at others 70 mph. Deputies clocked 102 drivers traveling between 90-99 mph, the sheriff's office said. The cost of a traffic citation for speeding 50 mph over the speed limit on an interstate is $1,104 and a required court appearance, according to Florida law. The average speed for citations written was 90 mph in the 70 mph zone and 86 in the in the 65 mph zone. "According to the Teletrac Navman study, Interstate 4 is the most dangerous highway in the United States," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "It is our mission to keep you safe while in Polk County along this stretch of roadway by enforcing the speed limit and arresting those who drive recklessly. Please, slow down and pay attention. Your life and safety are important to us."
