Ice Cream From Manchester-Based Royal Recalled For Listeria

MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester Based Royal Ice Cream, citing, "an abundance of caution," is recalling three flavors of its Batch Ice Cream brand because of "possible" contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The ice cream is sold at Big Y supermarkets and the regional chain made the announcement to begin this week. According to the announcement, during routine environmental sampling at the Batch facility, samples indicated that Listeria Monocytogenes was present within the production area. No ice cream pints have tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes at this time, officials said. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Big Y officials said that, to date, there have been no reports indicating that these products have caused any illnesses. Store officials said customers returning any of the products will receive a full refund.
