PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — A yard waste collection program will return to Prince William County in March and continue through September. Yard waste collection is required to take place at least once weekly through the spring and summer, the county said in an update.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors approved the new curbside yard waste collection program in December 2020 through a unanimous vote. Under the new addition to the county code, businesses, residents, and homeowners associations are required to arrange for yard waste removal separate from trash and recycling collection.
For collection, residents must place their yard waste in reusable containers marked "yard waste" or in biodegradable paper bags. Plastic bags can no longer be used for yard waste, according to the county.
Prince William County residents can also elect to take yard waste to the County Landfill or Balls Ford Road Compost Facility on their own, free of charge. Yard waste would still have to be in biodegradable paper bags or reusable containers.
"Separated yard waste is made into a soil amendment product or mulch at the Balls Ford Road Compost Facility instead of being landfilled," the county said in a news release. "Compost and mulch products are available for purchase by residents, landscapers, and garden centers."
More information about the county's yard waste collection program is available online.
