HIGHLAND PARK, NJ — A man jumped from a second-floor window to escape a fire in Highland Park Tuesday night, said police in that town. He survived, but remains at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in serious condition as of Wednesday morning. At 8:04 p.m. Tuesday, the Highland Park Police Department received a 911 call about smoke coming from an apartment on the 500 block of Benner Street. Patrol officers Kevin Garrity and Matthew Buttermark arrived to find the multi-unit apartment building on fire and heavy smoke pouring out from inside. The police officers also located a man on the ground; he apparently jumped from a second-floor window to escape the fire. There were still other people inside the burning building; Highland Park police officers had to evacuate several residents from their apartments. Police say the fire started in the kitchen of one of the units and rapidly spread to three surrounding apartments. All the individual apartments had working smoke detectors. The residents of four apartments total cannot return to their homes as of Wednesday. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Det. S. McGraw at 732-572-3800 Ext 4263 or [email protected] "Thank you to all of the agencies who responded to assist our police and fire departments," said Highland Park Police in a statement.
