Allegheny County COVID-19 Death Toll Surpasses 3,000 Mark

PITTSBURGH, PA — While the COVID-19 omicron surge continues to subside, Allegheny County marked a terrible milestone on Wednesday. More than 3,000 county residents have succumbed to the virus. To put that number into perspective, fewer than 100 county residents died from influenza from 2015 to 2022 combined, according to the county health department. "These people are not numbers," health department Director Dr. Debra Bogen said on Wednesday. "They are beloved members of our community - grandparents, parents, children, friends and neighbors." Among the notable people with Pittsburgh ties who died from the virus: Former Allegheny County Controller Mark Patrick Flaherty. Former Steelers running back Tim Lester. Grant Jackson, pitcher on the Pirates 1979 World Series champions. Anne Feeney, singer-songwriter and political activist. Greg Eide, owner of Eide's Entertainment. Kate Barr, Bridgeville mother who gave birth the day after her COVID-19 diagnosis.Brian Rowland, Pittsburgh police officer.Steve Kopy, owner of Kopy's bar in the South Side.
