PENN HILLS, PA — An auto dealership sold one vehicle whose brakes failed shortly thereafter and another where parts that were rusted and covered in duct tape but painted over to appear normal, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro's office announced. Shapiro's office has taken legal action against Martino Motors on Rodi Road and Donald J. Martino for allegedly violating consumer protection laws. Shapiro seeks to permanently ban Martino and the dealership from selling vehicles in Pennsylvania, and also wants restitution, civil penalties, court costs and other financial penalties. "We've seen an increase in demand for used cars here in Pennsylvania," Shapiro said in a news release. "And with that comes an increase in scammers. Scammers are shifting into high gear to try and take advantage of Pennsylvanians looking to buy a used car." An American consumer purchasing a used car today is paying 42 percent more than they would have in 2019, according to Kelley Blue Book.
