OSWEGO, IL — Students graduating high school who are pursuing a degree in higher education this fall are eligible to receive a $500 scholarship from the Oswego Fire Protection District. Two "outstanding seniors" from Oswego High School and Oswego East High School will be chosen to receive $500 scholarships "in honor of the dedicated leadership and service of all members of our fire district both past & present," officials said in a news release Wednesday. The fire district awards two scholarships each year, and the 2022 application period is open until 3 p.m. April 22. The scholarships are meant for students to use at an institution of higher learning. Officials said the application process is simple, but here are a few things to keep in mind when applying, according to scholarship guidelines: Preference is given to applications pursuing a degree in fire science or a related field. Students pursuing public safety will also be given preference, but it's weighed less than the fire science field.Students can only receive this scholarship once.Scholarships awarded are contingent on the availability of qualified applicants.Applicants who don't include a transcript and a one-page essay won't be considered. To pick up an application, people interested can visit Oswego Fire Station #1 at 3511 Woolley Road in Oswego. Applications and additional guidelines can be found on the fire district's website.
