Oregon City School District Probes Showing Of Video About Assault

Oregon City, OR —The situation at Oregon City High School is not getting better. There's a probe by the district. Parents are demanding how it happened. Students walked out. It all stems from an assembly last week titled "Voices." The purpose of the assembly was to address mental health issues by presenting videos made by students from diverse backgrounds. Something entirely different happened. One of the videos showed a male student in silhouette talking about how he had abused his ex-girlfriend. While n silhouette, people knew who the student was and who the ex-girlfriend – also a student – was. Students told their parents who complained to the board wanting to know who approved the video and demanding that that person be fired. On Friday morning, the school sent out a note to parents saying that the video had been approved by the Oregon City High School Unity Committee, which staged the assembly. The only problem, which came out quickly, was that the Unity Committee had warned the school about the video and said to should not be shown. When members of the committee complained about the misrepresentation, the school sent out a corrective email. The district board held a meeting later Friday to address the issue. Interim Superintendent Kyle Maier apologized and listened to parents and students. It was not enough. On Monday, dozens of students walked out. The district says that if they take action against a staff member, they won't be able to go into detail because of privacy issues, a concern that was not shown the abuse survivor whose attack was described in front of the school.
