WOODRIDGE, IL — A Woodridge man kept a loaded gun under the mattress in his 1-year-old's crib, with the weapon being found as part of a drug investigation, authorities said Thursday.
Tenzell Terry, 22, who lives in the 8100 block of Route 53, was arrested Tuesday on a number of charges, police said.
Before dawn Tuesday, Woodridge police carried out a search warrant at Terry's house. It was then that they found a loaded Glock 9mm handgun with an extended magazine of 30 rounds in the crib, police said.
The officers also discovered 20 grams of heroin and 37 grams of cocaine in the baby's room, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. They found a second magazine with five rounds and two empty magazines, along with $1,064 in cash, in a second bedroom, prosecutors said.
"The very idea that someone would hide a loaded weapon with one bullet in the chamber and an extended magazine under a mattress where his baby slept, as is alleged in this case, is just beyond belief," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "Additionally, the illegal narcotics allegedly found in the baby's room are further evidence of Mr. Terry's complete disregard for the safety of a 1-year-old baby."
Terry was charged with one count of armed violence, two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, all felonies.
His bail was set at $350,000.
