Mask Mandate Could End Next Week In Mecklenburg County

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC — The mask mandate that's been in place since August of 2021 after the delta variant of coronavirus spiked may soon come to an end. Mecklenburg County health leaders spoke to the Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners Tuesday, noting cases have gone down. Originally, the criteria for lifting the mask mandate was a percent positivity rate at or below five percent for a week or more. It was 26 percent on February 1, and has declined to 20 percent as of Feb. 7. Mecklenburg County Health Director Dr. Raynard Washington told the board that he could recommend the mask mandate be lifted as soon as next week. "I just want to share with you guys if we are in a position that this continues, we'll be in a position to make a recommendation to you guys to rescind the mask mandate," said Washington. If that recommendation is given, the county could lift the mandate as soon as next Wednesday. "We need to learn how to live with this," Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell, D-District 6, said. "I think we are doing that."
