DETROIT — The Ambassador bridge reopened Tuesday morning to U.S. bound traffic after a convoy of Canadian truck drivers closed it for several hours by blocking traffic and drivers from passing on the bridge.
However, traffic from Interstate 75 in Detroit to Canada across the bridge was still closed Tuesday morning, and city officials urged drivers to use the Bluewater Bridge in Port Huron. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel was also opened on Tuesday morning.
The backups started Monday afternoon on Interstate 75 in Detroit started Monday afternoon and the bridge was eventually shut down by nightfall with hundreds of truckers stranded in the traffic jam. Canada reported Monday night drivers could expect a four hour wait to cross the bridge.
The Canadian truck drivers are protesting some of country's COVID-19 mandates, specifically a new requirement that drivers entering Canada must be fully vaccinated or face testing and quarantine requirements.
