SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Student creativity is flourishing despite the recent challenges of the pandemic: Sag Harbor Elementary pre-kindergarten and kindergarten kids are busy working on their entries for the 2022 Parish Art Museum Student Exhibition, now in its 65th year. The 2022 Parrish Art Museum Student Exhibition will be open from March 12 through April 10. To register for the exhibition, teachers submit an outline of their students' group or individual projects. Title, medium, dimensions, grade level and description are defining factors of the art to be created and displayed, the district said. This year, the Sag Harbor pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are joining together to create the planets in the solar system complete with a 3D model of the James Webb telescope. "The pre-k and kindergarten students have been working eagerly with watercolor, clay and paper mache to finish their exhibit for the student art show at the Parrish Art Museum," said teacher Lisa Miller. "By recreating the planets in our solar system and building a 3D model of the James Webb telescope, the students are ready to reach for the stars and explore space with their imaginations." Teamwork is also critical, she said: "Students must work together for the project to be complete on time and as a functioning whole. During class, students learned about the solar system and current innovations in space exploration using mixed media elements. This led to curiosity and discussions that translated into the work itself, Miller said. "Students have been ecstatic to learn and talk about the 'what ifs' of space. The ideas and questions during class discussions help to inspire creativity and spark curiosity in their everyday lives. They cannot wait to bring their families to see all of their hard work in a 'real' museum," Miller said.
