Farm Irrigator

Jobs

Sequim WA

Description

River Run Farm is a mid-scale diversified vegetable farm in Sequim. We are committed to developing agricultural systems that prioritize soil health, crop quality, and produce affordability. As the farm's Irrigator you will be working as a part of a four person 'Production Team' that manages all of the farm's vegetable production. This is a rewarding but physically demanding job. Most of your time will be spent moving irrigation pipe through our vegetable garden and cover crop plantings. You will meet daily with the production team where you will be delegated a watering list and work to troubleshoot any scheduling conflicts. After that meeting you will be on your own for the remainder of the day to manage all of the irrigation. This is a job for someone who is physically in good shape, but also curious about growing plants and the ins and outs of vegetable farming. While most of your time will be spent moving pipe, you will slowly develop a familiarity with almost all aspects of our crop production system. You will learn to observe soil moisture and plant respiration. You will learn our tillage systems and get a sense of how soil is most effectively prepared. You will develop a keen sense of how weeds grow, and how best to manage them. And you will spend a lot of time observing and watching our vegetable plants grow, and working with the production team to best meet their needs. Some agricultural experience is ideal, but not necessary to apply for this job. Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is easy to get along with and takes direction well. This is a job where you will be working alone often, but a part of a social and dynamic setting. This is a seasonal job and begins in mid-April and you will have irrigation work till October. If you want to join the harvest crew for the months of October and November, that opportunity will be open to you. The job will end for the winter at Thanksgiving. Pay will most likely be $14.50, but if you have significant farming or irrigation experience we will consider paying more.
