Performance background, with pitch stability; having vocal training would be optimal as I've encountered amateurs and dabblers who obviously love music and singing but they are off key, all over the place and can't hit or hold notes or hit notes accurately when dealing with intervals. Unfortunately, a lot of these amateur singer folks have ears and brains that indicate to them that everything is fine and is sounding great and they cannot be convinced otherwise. In their minds they sound like a superstar. Shower singers should, at this point, hit the showers. Since I did touch on technical issues directly above I will add that it is expected that our singer already has ongoing coaching or starts getting coaching and sticks with it so the voice and ability is optimized and stays that way. This is nothing new in the big leagues. All top tier, consistently performing and recording vocalists are on that agenda. As a result of coaching, training and maintenance you won't wear out your voice and sound like Popeye when you're 41 years old. The immediate benefit happens when you get a great idea that's challenging and you can get it working without straining or harming your vocal chords. Bring a unique rocky edgy melodic swinging vibe and cool vocals, deliver the hooks and embellish with wails screams growls purrs snarls sneers hollers yowls cries and whatever else you can dig out of yourself. Generic sounding, Bel Canto, Broadway Theater style vocals, overloaded with vibrato, not needed. Not wanted here. It's not the big band era anymore. Carry a solid tune--lead singing means exactly what the term says--you're leading it all, and able to do vocals that cut through the band and demonstrate you're in command, with good energy, charisma, no fear of performing live. Vocals only; I am convinced that when attention is divided between vocals and playing an instrument then the vocal performance suffers. Thus, I want the singer focused on delivering great vocals, only, not watching their hands on a guitar or other instrument and losing pitch, timing or pronunciation. If your significant other is not on board with your music career plans--jealous, insecure, suspicious and fearful of abandonment, then cure their fear of abandonment the easy way--abandon them lol. 😎 There are many ways to make a relationship successful.
