Join us for the screening of 'Since I been Down' by Gilda Shepard and a gun violence prevention panel followed by a community Q&A.
Gun violence has historically always affected communities of color at a disproportionate rate, especially the black community. The COVID 19 pandemic has exacerbated this to the nth degree, with cases involving gun violence going up 50% since 2020 and the solve rate going way down along with a deficit of officers.
We've asked the government, we've asked legislatures to do something about this cycle of the school to prison pipeline, and now it's time to have a conversation with the community. We need to come together internally to develop a plan of action for preventing gun violence in our community.
The Institute For Black Justice has partnered with local independent filmmaker Gilda Shephard to screen part of her Movie,’ Since I Been Down. ‘Since I Been Down’ is a true story that looks at the history of gun violence in the Hilltop neighborhood, located in Tacoma, Washington. The screening will lead us into a panel discussion with kings in the black community who have lived experience navigating this and have risen above it.
Let the King’s Talk is a free event, and everyone is welcome! There will be a community Q&A discussion after the panel.
RSVP to guarantee free snacks and parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged.
All Pierce County Health Department COVID-19 regulations will be followed. Masks are required.
