Description
Piano-playing, soul and gospel-tinged vocalist Counterfeit Madison presents a concert as part of Voices of Freedom by Juneteenth. Juneteenth Cincinnati presents Voices of Freedom, an exhibition of commissioned new works by 10 artists and 10 poets and performing arts series exploring the promise and reality of “freedom” as experienced by those whose lives and destinies were touched by emancipation. On Saturday, March 19, pianist, vocalist and composer Counterfeit Madison (Columbus, OH) will take the stage for Singing for Freedom, presenting a tribute to Nina Simone. The event is free, but tickets are required and space is limited. Masks and proof of COVID vaccination or negative COVID test result required for entry. Sharon Udoh creates and performs under the name Counterfeit Madison. She is a queer, first-generation Nigerian-American composer, pianist, vocalist, educator, speaker, and cultural critic. Udoh's funky yet classical piano-playing and soul and gospel-tinged voice make her a powerful performer. Her work, both through her original work or the music of legendary musician Nina Simone, focuses on how humans change over time, the necessity of personal revolution and connection, and emotional curiosity. Her performances are magnetic, dangerous, and kind; they embody the richness of complexity, absurdity, empathy, chaos, and the struggle and freedom of Black individuals in America and worldwide. This event is made possible by American Rescue Plan funds from the City of Cincinnati, administered through ArtsWave. Founded in 2004, the Kennedy Heights Arts Center is a non-profit community arts center providing cultural events, art exhibitions, and arts education programs for youth and adults. It's mission is to enhance the life of our surrounding community through arts and cultural experiences that embrace diversity, foster creativity and build community.
