EAST BAY — How to pay for dog or cat food during the coronavirus economic crisis is one thing you don't need to worry about. The East Bay SPCA is operating a free, drive-thru pet food distribution every Friday at the East Bay SPCA Spay/Neuter Center, 410 Hegenberger Road. It started two weeks ago, and 3,000 pounds of food have already been given away. "We are glad that people are coming out to pick up food and happy to be able to offer this service during Shelter In Place. We want pet owners to feel welcome and to consider us a resource during this difficult time," said Raquel Bernaldo, Manager of Humane Advocacy. Your next chance is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. How does it work? Bernaldo said last week,"It's a lot like a fast-food drive-through. Clients drive up to a staff member and place an 'order' of how much cat or dog food they need, then another team member fills the order and wheels it on a cart to the driver, who picks up the pre-bagged food right from their car window." You may pick up enough food for up to 2 dogs and 2 cats. Everyone must remain in their vehicles at all times. No walk-up clients can be accommodated for health and safety reasons. "We are grateful to companies such as Pet Food Express and Hill's Pet Nutrition for generously donating supplies of dry food that we can then distribute to those in our community who need it most," says Bernaldo. "Pet owners who can't regularly afford pet food will often give their own food to their cat or dog, which is a choice we do not want people to have to make. This at least provides a temporary solution." While the East Bay SPCA's shelters are temporarily closed, the agency continues to provide critical veterinary services.
