Join us in celebrating St. Joseph's Day with a cultural immersion into Sicilian cooking led by Sicilian chef Annalisa Pompeo. Saint Joseph’s Day Cultural Cooking ExperienceSaint Joseph’s Day, or La Festa di San Giuseppe, is celebrated annually on March 19. San Giuseppe, the spouse of the Virgin Mary and the guardian-father of Jesus is a highly venerated saint in Sicily and Italy. The patron of fathers, carpenters, and those who toil for their work, his feast day -- which by no mistake is aligned with the spring equinox -- is observed practicing many beautiful traditions, mostly concerning food. It is a holiday that recognizes having survived a drought caused by a severe famine in the 10th century, but metaphorically, that famine is also the season of winter.  Our gathering today is more than just a cooking class featuring traditional Sicilian recipes enjoyed for the feast. It will be a cultural immersion that is co-hosted by Allison Scola of Experience Sicily, a boutique tour operator that specializes in locally-seasoned, multisensory travel in Sicily, and Annalisa Pompeo of GoSicily Sicilian Cooking Experiences, a hands-on, experiential excursion operator and cooking school based in Favara, Sicily. In cooperation with Babylon Mercantile, today’s events (a lunch and a dinner, both following the same agenda) will stimulate your intellect and capture your senses.
