DOUGLASVILLE, GA - With Christmas less than a week away, the Douglas County Animal Shelter is at full capacity.
Animal Services Director Frances McMillan said officials want the animals to have forever homes for the holidays and are running specials in an attempt at more adoptions, according to the Douglas County Sentinel.
Dogs can be adopted for $25 and cats for $10. The base adoption fee normally for all dogs and cats is $35.00, according to the shelter's website. An additional fee for vetting includes: sterilization surgery, the rabies vaccine and a lifetime registration microchip.
"We have a very nice facility, but it's not home," McMillan told the Sentinel. "They want to go home for Christmas. Some of the animals have been here for months because we try to hang on to them as long as we can."
Each animal receives a goodie bag with items such as collars, leashes, and food. McMillian said that residents also have the opportunity to sponsor an animal for Christmas, for just $45, with the money going towards their spay and neuter program.
The Douglas County Animal Shelter is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The shelter is closed on Monday.
The shelter is located adjacent to Deer Lick Park at 2171 Mack Rd. in Douglasville. For more information, call the Douglas County Animal Shelter at 770-942-5961.
