Description

Continuing to Serve: Reflecting on the History and Legacy of African American Service Members Hosted by the Pritzker Military Museum & Library, Black Veterans Empowerment Council (BVEC) & Black Veterans Project (BVP). Historically, military service for African Americans has had a dual meaning as both their fight for the nation and more importantly the fight for their own democracy and equality for themselves and their families, they were fighting for the best chance of freedom. Looking across time African Americans have served bravely and with distinction while simultaneously struggling for their own civil rights from “the world’s greatest democracy.” Join the PMML as we present a panel discussion moderated by retired Col. Krewasky Salter, a contributor for We Return Fighting: World War I and the Shaping of Modern Black Identity and curator of the complimenting exhibit at the National Museum of African American History & Culture, along with a diverse panel of black veterans as they discuss a perspective of what service means for the African American community and how they have continued to serve after their time in the military. Come for the happy hour from 4-5pm and have an opportunity to engage with black veteran owned non-profits and social impact business leaders in the Chicago region and stay for the panel discussion from 5-6pm. Drinks and light snacks will be provided during the networking happy hour. NOTICE TO ATTENDEES: In accordance with the City of Chicago's Public Health Order 2021-2, vaccination is required to enter the Pritzker Military Museum & Library. Please be sure to bring proper identification and proof of vaccination. THIS EVENT WILL BE FILMED AND PHOTOGRAPHED. The Black Veterans Empowerment Council (BVEC) seeks to bridge the gap between the various Black veteran communities and serve as an unified voice to inform stakeholders of the needs of Black Veterans.
