Description

No leaves? No problem! "Learn how to identify some of our region's most common trees, even after their leaves have fallen. We will discuss the many ways to identify trees, including through bark characteristics, leaf scars, branch arrangement, scent, bud characteristics, and habitat. We will also explore those trees that retain their leaves throughout winter -- the conifers. This course is for anyone with an interest in close observation of trees and a desire to better get to know their tree neighbors. We will use group discussions, observations, and hands- and noses-on experiences to learn together as we walk along some trails at the Bethel Recreation Center." Instructor(s): Julie Loosigian, Instructor Bio: A native of New Hampshire, Julie spent her childhood running around the woods and fields of her grandparents’ vegetable farm. She recently earned a master’s degree at Antioch University New England, where she studied forest ecology, environmental education, and conservation biology. Out of her time at Antioch grew a book she hopes will be published in the not-too-distant future, The Big 40: An Interactive Beginner’s Field Guide to 40 Trees of the Northeast. This Bethel U course will employ many of the techniques she writes about there. Julie is a farmer and farm educator at Sweet Beet Farm in Bradford, NH, working to grow healthy food and whole humans in harmony with the earth. Number of Sessions: This group meets one time. Materials to Have Prepared: Bring a notebook and a pen/pencil if you'd like to take notes.
